[ARCHIVED] Update #2- Aggravated Battery with Firearm Investigation

 NEWS RELEASE
 City of Carbondale, Illinois
 January 30, 2023

CARBONDALE – On 10/27/22 at approximately 4:32 a.m., City of Carbondale Police Officers responded to the 700 block of South Rawlings Street in reference to shots fired.  Officers found a shooting victim who sustained serious injuries.  During the course of the investigation, officers identified Tracy L. Wimberly, 52 of Carbondale as a suspect in the case.  On 11/04/22 a Jackson County Grand Jury indicted Wimberly for Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon.      

On 01/17/023 the U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force in Memphis, TN located and arrested Wimberly.  On 01/21/23, Wimberly was transported to the Jackson County Jail where he remains incarcerated pending a court appearance.  The investigation remains active and on-going.

Prior Updated Release - On 10/27/22 at approximately 4:32 a.m., City of Carbondale Police Officers responded to the 700 block of South Rawlings Street in reference to shots fired.  The victim in this case is still hospitalized and is considered in serious, but not life threatening, condition.  During the course of the investigation detectives, working with the assistance of the Jackson County States Attorney’s, office executed several search warrants and applied for an arrest warrant for Maza D. Lynch, 45 of Carbondale for Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon Obstructing Justice and Violation of Bond Condition (Possession of a Firearm).  On 10-28-22 investigators located and arrested Lynch on the warrant.   Lynch was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail.  The police department would like to thank the Carbondale community for their assistance with this investigation.  The investigation into the incident is active and ongoing.  

Prior Release - On 10/27/22 at approximately 4:32 a.m., City of Carbondale Police Officers responded to the 700 block of South Rawlings Street in reference to shots fired.  The officers located an individual who sustained gunshot wounds and they immediately began life saving efforts. The Jackson County Ambulance Service responded and transported the victim to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for treatment. The preliminary information learned from the investigation indicates the involved parties are all known acquaintances of each other.  There is not any suspect information and no known threats to release at this time. The investigation is active and ongoing.
