[ARCHIVED] City of Carbondale Receives $1.8M in Federal Funding to Resurface S. Wall Street

CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale will receive $1.8M in federal grant funding from the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) to resurface South Wall Street from Park Street to Walnut Street.

In addition to resurfacing, the project will include a "Road Diet" reconfiguration to lower the potential for crashes and reduce vehicle speed. According to the Federal Highway Safety Administration, a road diet converts a four-lane roadway to a three-lane roadway consisting of two through lanes and a center two-way turn lane.

Bi-directional bike lanes and ADA-accessible sidewalks will also be added as part of the City of Carbondale’s Complete Streets commitment to calm traffic, improve safety, and recognize all transit modes as integral elements of the transportation system.

The anticipated start date for the project is the Summer of 2024.

“Carbondale prides itself on providing its visitors, students, businesses and residents with a unique mix of edge and ease. It’s a cultural town, yet free of pretense, embracing the great outdoors as readily as urban sophistication. Here, we are open to new ideas, experiences and cultures, so you are encouraged to both express yourself and be yourself, in all ways. That’s Carbondale…All Ways Open… for family, fun, business, new ideas and a bright tomorrow.”
