Homicide Investigation

CARBONDALE – In reference to the shooting incident on 10/03/22 in the 700 block of South Lewis Lane that resulted in a death, the victim is identified as, John Pruitt 37 years old of Chicago. In the course of the investigation, investigators arrested David Evans Jr., 29 years old of Carbondale, in the 200 block of North Wall Street. Pruitt and Edwards are known acquaintances and they had an ongoing dispute. Investigators charged Evans with First Degree Murder.
Officers also arrested Lawrence Abernathy, 27 of Carbondale, and Anthony S. Spruille, 26 of Carterville during a vehicle stop in the area at South Wall Street and East College Street. Officers charged them both with Obstruction of Justice. After consulting with the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, Edwards was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail. Abernathy and Spruille were released on recognizance bonds.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the SIU Police Department, the Jackson County Coroner’s Office, the Jackson County Ambulance Service and the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office all assisted in the investigation. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

David Edwards Jr., 29 of Carbondale
