CARBONDALE POLICE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR
ENTRY-LEVEL AND EXPERIENCED POLICE OFFICERS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CARBONDALE – Interested in a career that offers four-day work weeks and great pay and benefits? The Carbondale Police Department is seeking applicants for Lateral Transfers and first-time police officers! Qualified entry-level applicants should submit applications by October 1, 2022, to be considered for the 14-week-police academy beginning January 2023.
As the largest department in Southern Illinois, the Carbondale Police Department offers a range of opportunities to grow your career in law enforcement. Currently, there are opportunities for assignment to Investigations and the Special Response Team. All officers are also encouraged to participate in advanced specialized training in areas like crime scene investigation and advanced technical investigations training.
The Carbondale Police Department offers a $5,000 sign-on bonus for lateral transfers and entry-level officers. In addition, we are proud to provide the following benefits and job perks:
- Four-day work weeks
- Volunteer overtime paid at 1.5 rate of salary
- Take-home car for officers that live in Carbondale
- Compensatory “Comp” Time at a 1 -1.5 ratio
- Uniform and equipment issued, and an additional $650 annual clothing allowance
- 11 City holidays, plus one floating holiday

- Starting salary is $53,331.20 (Fiscal Year 2023)
- After the one-year probationary period is complete, salary increases to $61,963.20 (FY 2023)
- Qualified Lateral Transfer
- 5-Year annual base salary of $67,350 (FY 2023)
- 10-Year annual base salary is $68,933 (FY 2023)

The following requirements are needed to apply for the Entry-Level Police Officer position:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Age 21 (20 with certain restrictions)
- Associates Degree (or 60 semester hours) - Education requirements go down with police experience and prior completion of a police academy
- No felony conviction. NOTE: Some convictions for misdemeanors or serious traffic offenses may also disqualify applicants from further consideration
- Proof of a valid driver’s license
- Must successfully complete an oral interview and background investigation
- Must successfully complete a medical examination and psychological tests
- Must sign a 36-month (3year) Pre-Employment Agreement
