[ARCHIVED] Update Reckless Discharge of a Firearm Investigation

City of Carbondale Police detectives continue to follow up on the fight and shots fired that occurred in the 500 block of South Illinois on 04-30-22 at 2:16 a.m. Detectives identified the shooter as Cody A. Dempsey, 28 of Carbondale. On 05-04-22 members of the Carbondale Police Department executed a search warrant in the 1900 block of Stephens Road and arrested Dempsey.  Detectives charged Dempsey with Attempted First Degree Murder and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm.  Assistance from community members and video surveillance assisted detectives during this investigation. The investigation is still active and ongoing.   Information will be submitted to the Jackson County State’s Attorney for consideration of additional charges.

 ****Prior Release****: On 04-30-22 at 2:16 a.m., City of Carbondale police officers responded to the 500 block of South Illinois Avenue in reference to a report of a fight in progress.  Officers made a quick response and determined the suspects already fled from the area.  While investigating the reported fight, officers heard several shots fired from what was determined to be the 200 block of West College Street.  Officers responded to that area and found the suspects already fled from the area.  No injuries or property damage were reported as a result of the incident.  The investigation is active and ongoing.
