Homicide Investigation

The continuing investigation of the death discovered in the 1100 block of East College Street is determined to be a homicide. The victim is identified as, Gloria Hopkins, 26 years old of Carbondale. Carbondale Police investigators determined she was the victim of a domestic incident with her husband, Gregory Hopkins, 27 years old of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Investigators worked with the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office and obtained an arrest warrant for Gregory Hopkins for charges of First Degree Murder and Aggravated Domestic Battery. Investigators determined Gregory Hopkins fled from Carbondale and traveled to the Los Angeles, California area. Los Angeles, California Police Department officers located Gregory Hopkins and arrested him on 01-06-22. Gregory Hopkins is currently incarcerated in Los Angeles, California awaiting extradition back to Jackson County. The investigation is active and ongoing.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Gloria. The Carbondale Police Department worked closely with Jackson County State’s Attorney Joe Cervantez and his staff during this investigation in order to charge and arrest Gregory Hopkins. The Carbondale Police Department was also assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Los Angeles, California Police Department Pacific Division and Operation West Bureau Task Force, the Gardena Police Department, the Culver City Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force in East St. Louis, Illinois. We are grateful for the teamwork between these agencies as it led to the quick apprehension of Gregory Hopkins in order to bring justice to Gloria, her family and loved ones.

Death Investigation

On 01/04/22 at 7:51 p.m., City of Carbondale Police Officers responded to the 1100 block of East College Street in reference to a welfare check on a possible missing person. Officers checked the residence and found the resident deceased inside. The cause of death is not yet determined. The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time to ensure notifications can be made to family members. The investigation into the incident is active and ongoing.
