The City of Carbondale Police Department focused their traffic enforcement efforts on Distracted Driving during the month of April, which is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. During this enforcement campaign, sixty-one drivers were ticketed for various violations involving using electronic communication devices while driving. During the April distracted driving enforcement period, officers issued drivers tickets for other traffic violations as well including speeding, no insurance and Driving While License Suspended.
The City of Carbondale Police Department strongly enforces distracted driving laws for one reason – to save lives. The department would like to encourage drivers to use hands free options when choosing to use a cell phone while driving. Using your phone in anything other than hands free mode in Illinois is not only dangerous, it is illegal. Break the cycle. Drop It and Drive.
The City of Carbondale Police Department joined forces with state and local law enforcement and highway safety partners for this enforcement effort. The Illinois distracted driving campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
