[ARCHIVED] Trespassing/Mental Health Crisis Complaint

On 04-09-21, at approximately 3:41 p.m., City of Carbondale police officers responded to a disorderly subject that was trespassing in the 500 block of East Main Street.  Officers made contact with a male subject and determined that he was suffering from a mental health crisis.  The officers were familiar with him because of other calls from the public about his behavior throughout the day.   Following contact with the subject, the officers observed erratic behavior and noted that he was in possession of weapons.  The officers established a dialogue with the individual and utilized their crisis intervention training skills to gain voluntary compliance.

Although the subject would not comply and would not drop his weapons, the officers took their time, de-escalated the situation, and used minimal force to take the subject into custody.  Officers then took necessary extra steps to get the individual needed care.

The officers used their experience and training to exercise restraint and compassion to help this individual in need.   The officers accomplished this without anyone being injured.  Carbondale officers respond this way almost every day to similar situations in order to keep the citizens of Carbondale safe.
