[ARCHIVED] Update - Aggravated Discharge of Firearm Investigation

On 02-25-2021 at approximately 7:10 p.m., City of Carbondale police officers responded to the 200 block of East Sycamore Street regarding a report of an aggravated discharge of a firearm.  The suspect, identified as Jalen Cobb, age 27 of Carbondale, was not located at the time of the incident.  On 03-08-2021 at about 8:16 p.m. officers of the City of Carbondale Police Department learned Jalen Cobb turned himself in to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in reference to the incident.  Cobb is charged with Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail.  Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call the police department at 618-457-3200 or Crime Stoppers at 618-549-COPS (2677).  The investigation into the incident is active and on-going.

Prior Release on 02-26-2021:

On 02-25-2021 at approximately 7:10 p.m., City of Carbondale police officers responded to the 200 block of East Sycamore Street regarding a report of an aggravated discharge of a firearm.  The suspect, identified as Jalen Cobb, age 27 of Carbondale, was not located.  While officers were at the scene, a witness identified the suspect’s vehicle, driving in the area.  Officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.  Officers determined the suspect wasn’t in the vehicle but, did locate two handguns and an illegal amount of cannabis.  One of the handguns was discovered to have been reported as stolen to another police agency.  During the course of the investigation officers arrested Courtney Hunter, age 21 of Danville Illinois, and Jajuan Smith, age 22 of Carbondale, for Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, and Manufacture/Delivery of Cannabis.  After consulting with the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Officer Hunter was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail and Smith was released with a notice to appear in court.  There were no injuries reported with either incident.  Cobb is considered to be armed and dangerous.  Anyone with information about Cobb’s whereabouts or either incident is encouraged to call the police department at 618-457-3200 or Crime Stoppers at 618-549-COPS (2677).  The investigation into both incidents are active and on-going.
