[ARCHIVED] Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon

On 01/21/21 at approximately 4:06 p.m., a City of Carbondale police officer stopped a motor vehicle for a traffic violation in the 600 block of East Walnut Street. The officer identified the driver as Andre T. Bailey, 34 years old, of Carbondale and the passenger as Saiyan N. Matthews, 19 years old, of Carbondale. Matthews fled from the vehicle on foot and officers subsequently captured him in the immediate area. The investigation revealed that Matthews discarded a loaded handgun during the foot pursuit. Officers arrested Bailey and charged him with Driving with a Suspended Driver’s License and Possession of Cannabis. Officers released Bailey with notices to appear in court. Officers charged Matthews with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Resisting a Peace Officer.
