[ARCHIVED] Homicide Investigation Update

On 01-22-2020 at 12:21 a.m., officers of the City of Carbondale Police Department responded to the 2200 block of North Illinois Avenue regarding a report of shots fired, where an individual was reported to be injured. Officers arrived and located an unresponsive male, later identified as 25 year old Cordell Johnson of Cairo, Illinois, with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers, along with personnel from the Jackson County Ambulance and Carbondale Fire Department, attempted life-saving measures but were unable to resuscitate Johnson, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The ongoing investigation has determined that a dispute amongst acquaintances resulted in an altercation which led to the gunfire. Detectives have identified and arrested two suspects at this point in the investigation. They are identified as 23 years old Alecze Cummings of Carbondale and 26 years old Cameron Robinson of Cairo. Cummings is currently charged with Cannabis Conspiracy and Obstructing Justice. Robinson is currently charged with Cannabis Conspiracy and Aggravated Fleeing to Elude. Both Cummings and Robinson are incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail. This investigation is currently active and ongoing.

Homicide Investigation 

On 01-22-2020 at 12:21 a.m., officers of the City of Carbondale Police Department responded to the 2200 block of North Illinois Avenue regarding a report of shots fired, where an individual was reported to be injured. Officers arrived and located a 25 year old black male unresponsive on the pavement in front of a residence, suffering from several gunshot wounds. Officers, along with personnel from the Jackson County Ambulance and Carbondale Fire Department attempted life-saving measures, but were unable to resuscitate the male. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. The name of the victim is being withheld at this time pending notification of family members. The investigation into this incident is ongoing. The Jackson County Coroner’s Office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the investigation.
