Experience/Lateral Police Officer Program

If you have two or more years of post-probationary work experience as a police officer and meet the outlined qualifications, you are eligible for the Lateral Police Officer Program. Applications for experienced police officers are accepted on an ongoing basis and are reviewed weekly. The hiring needs of the Department determine oral interviews. 

Entry-Level Police Officer

Carbondale Entry-Level Police Officer Requirements

  • Age 21 (20 with certain restrictions)
  • Associates Degree (or 60 semester hours) - Education requirements go down with police experience and prior completion of a police academy
  • No record of felony offenses or certain misdemeanor offenses
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Valid Driver’s License

City of Carbondale COVID-19 Vaccination Policy

All prospective, newly hired, and/or onboarding employees hired after the effective date of the City’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy (September 27, 2021) will be required to be fully vaccinated before their start date unless otherwise exempted from the Policy by an approved accommodation request. If a new employee has received a COVID-19 vaccination before their employment at the City of Carbondale, proof of vaccination must be provided to the Human Resources department.

City Limit Residency Boundary Requirement

The City of Carbondale requires its employees in pay grades 1 to 7 to live within a nine-mile radius of the center of Carbondale. City employees in pay grades 8 and 9 must reside within Carbondale city limits. The nine-mile radius is outlined in RED. Please zoom in to accurately check for addresses within the nine miles.
