CITY OF CARBONDALE ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN GIVING TUESDAY  

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale is encouraging residents to participate in Giving Tuesday on November 28.

Every year, the City provides financial support for several nonprofit organizations in the community. This includes the Boys and Girls Club, Attucks Community Services, Carbondale Main Street, Good Samaritan Ministries, The Women’s Center, Carbondale Community Arts, I Can Read and WDBX Community Radio.

Giving Tuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to kick off the holiday giving season.

To participate in Giving Tuesday, visit www.southernillinoisgivingtuesday.org. All charitable donations are tax deductible.

CITY OF CARBONDALE TO HOST COMMUNITY TREE LIGHTING CEREMONY

CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale is kicking off the Lights Fantastic Parade a few days early with a special Community Tree Lighting Ceremony on Monday, November 27.

The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. in front of City Hall located at 200 S. Illinois Avenue.

The tree, donated by George Sheffer of Murdale True Value, will be lit every night at 5 p.m. throughout the holiday season.

CITY OF CARBONDALE ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS TO RECYCLE OLD TRASH CANS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE – Carbondale residents who find themselves with unneeded trash cans following the new trash cart rollout have several options to choose from.

Residents can keep their old can and use it for other purposes; pass it on to someone who needs it; bring it to Southern Recycling (wheels and metal must be removed); or make a note on it asking City workers to take it to the landfill.

If you would like to give your trash can a new home, a site has been set up by Keep Carbondale Beautiful behind Hickory Lodge at 1115 W. Sycamore Street for “Trash Can Give Away.” Residents can leave cans in the back corner of the parking lot, next to the shed. Anyone in need of a free trash can is invited to come take one.

Carbondale Fire Department to Present Check to SIH Cancer Institute

CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale Fire Department will present the SIH Cancer Institute with a $600 check from its breast cancer t-shirt sales on Friday, November 17.

Members of the media are invited to attend a check presentation at Fire Station #2 located at 401 N. Glenview Drive at 10 a.m.

Representatives from SIH and the Carbondale Fire Department will be available for interviews.

Southern Illinois University and VFW Post 2605 are teaming up to host a Veterans Day Ceremony to honor the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

The event will be held at Veterans Memorial Plaza (corner of Washington and E. Main Streets) at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 10.

There will be opening remarks by SIU President Randy Dunn, a keynote address by SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno and a proclamation by Carbondale Mayor John “Mike” Henry.

City of Carbondale to Receive Finance Award

CITY OF CARBONDALE TO RECEIVE FINANCE AWARD 

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE –
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the City of Carbondale the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget.

In order to receive the award, the City must publish a budget document that meets program criteria as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communication device. 

Budgets must be rated as “proficient” in all four categories as well as 14 other mandatory criteria within those categories.

This is the 31st  year the City has received the award.

The award will be presented to the Finance Director on Tuesday, November 7 at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.

CITY OF CARBONDALE TO CONDUCT HOUSING SURVEY FOR REHABILITATION PROGRAM

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CARBONDALE – In an effort to continue to bring grant funding to the community, the City of Carbondale will be conducting a housing survey in northeast Carbondale to help determine a target area for future rehabilitation grants.

City staff will be conducting door-to-door surveys from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. now through November.

The survey will consist of demographics and economic and housing-related questions that are required by the state for housing rehabilitation assistance. Surveys will take approximately five minutes to complete.

All of the information gathered will be used solely for statistical analysis and will be kept confidential in accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-579). Residents are encouraged to participate.

Carbondale Fire Department to Host Fire Truck Dedication

The Carbondale Fire Department is hosting an official dedication and wet down ceremony for Fire Truck 7 on Wednesday, October 18.

The event will be held at Fire Station #2 (401 N. Glenview Drive) beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Meet the Mayor and Chancellor Event

from 11 a.m.-noon. This is an opportunity for students and members of the community to talk to
the Mayor and Chancellor over coffee.

Carbondale Mayor Elected to IML Board of Directors

CARBONDALE – The City of Carbondale is excited to announce Mayor John “Mike” Henry has been elected to serve as a Vice President of the Illinois Municipal League (IML).

Henry will serve a one-year term on the organization’s Board of Directors.

“Through my role on the IML board, I will collaborate with mayors from around the state on issues that affect all of our communities,” said Henry. “I am excited to exchange ideas and share solutions as we advocate for local government at the state and federal level.”

For more than 100 years, the Illinois Municipal League has continuously worked with local communities in Illinois to provide a formal voice on matters involving common interests.
