    The City will begin hydrant flushing on the west side of Carbondale at the intersection of South Illinois and West Grand Avenues as well as at the intersection of south Oakland Avenue and west Chautauqua Street and on the east side at the intersection of South Wall and East Park Streets.

    The City of Carbondale will host an open house to present the plans and receive comments on the Oakland Avenue Reconstruction Project. Improvements include new concrete pavement with dedicated bicycle lanes, new sidewalks, driveway aprons, storm sewers and appurtenances. In order to accommodate dedicated bicycle lanes in each direction, the existing on-street parking, south of Mill Street, will be removed.

  56. Carbondale Annual Spring Cleanup and Recycling Day

    Registration and Orientation starts at 9 am. After receiving supplies (gloves and bags) and assignments, volunteers go to their assigned spots and pick up litter and recyclables, leaving the bags on site for the City workers to collect and Rotarians to weigh. One change from previous years: instead of prizes for most trash collected, there will be a random drawing for a variety of prizes, donated by Hunan, 710 Bookstore, and Panera, with more expected.     We invite you to catch some rays, relax, and cool off at Poplar Camp Beach. The beach is a well-groomed sandy entry to the cool, clean waters of Cedar Lake. Clean restrooms, picnic tables, a concession stand with cold drinks, ice cream, and a variety of snacks are available to make your visit even more convenient and pleasurable. To reach Poplar Camp Beach from Carbondale, travel south on U.S. Highway 51 to the second traffic light south of Pleasant Hill Road. Turn right on old Hwy. 51 and drive ½ mile to Cedar Creek Road. Turn right onto Cedar Creek Road and follow to Poplar Camp Road on the left (approximately 1.2 miles), across from Union Hill Road on the right. Turn left on Poplar Camp Road which ends at the beach parking lot. The City of Carbondale owns and operates Poplar Camp Beach along with the City’s boat launch and access area.   6. DEA Drug Take-Back Day for Unwanted Prescription Drugs

    On Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Carbondale Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public its 16th opportunity in 7 years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to the police department at 501 South Washington Street in Carbondale, Illinois. (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.) The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. The Carbondale Police Department is also partnering with Kroger to include a secondary site where unwanted medications can be disposed. The secondary site will be at Kroger, located at 501 North Giant City Road in Carbondale, IL. The Kroger take back site will also be open on Saturday October 27th, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
